In the upcoming months, Johnson’s Gardens', horticulturist Michaela Molter will be holding classes to educate anyone and everyone on different areas of gardening. Classes will be held from 11 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. These classes are free of charge, but due to space being limited, we ask that you register in advance. April 23rd - Handling Nursery Stock
Learn the in’s and out’s of safely transporting nursery plants from the nursery to your home. As well as care and handling of plant material before and during planting.
May 14th - Spring & Summer Container Gardening
From vegetables and herbs to perennials and vibrant-colored annuals, container gardens liven-up any entrance way, patio or open garden space. Horticulturist, Michaela Molter, will describe elements of container garden design and discuss cultural practices to keep the plants lush and flowering for months on end.
June 4th - Gardening for Kids
Our children are the seeds of our future; get them involved with gardening projects. This class targets grandparents, parents and children of all ages. Get great gardening ideas for involving kids and have them participate in our hands-on planting demonstration. They will learn how to transplant plants into a container or the ground and how to sow seeds.
*Bring 2 medium to small-sized planting containers; plants, seeds and soil will be provided.
June 26th - Deer Resistant Plants
Look dear, no deer! Having trouble with the local wildlife? Are they feasting on your favorite plants? In this class we will not only talk about animal-friendly techniques to prevent deer damage, but which plants have proven time and time again to be deer resistant.
July 9th - Native Plants of Wisconsin
"Going Green" is one of the hottest trends right now, and one way to become part of this craze is to use native plants. There is a vast selection of magnificent and durable native plants to include in our landscapes. This class is perfect for those just starting, or wanting to learn more about creating a natural, plant-based garden.
July 23rd - Butterfly Gardening
Are you interested in attracting butterflies to your landscape? Learn how to create your own butterfly sanctuary while focusing on key plants to incorporate into the garden that are necessary for the completion of their life cycle.
August 27th - Plants for Fall & Winter
Aesthetic fall and winter interest is important for all Northern climate landscapes. Our focus for this class will be on plants that provide a spectacular fall color display and continuing winter appeal.
September 17th - Fall Containers
The planting season is coming to an end, however, that does not mean you have to set aside your gloves and trowel just yet. Spice up your spring and summer containers with fall blooming plants!
October 15th - DIY Pruning
Have you ever questioned when and how to make the cut? Join us for a session on proper pruning times and techniques. Every plant is unique, and knowing how to manage its growth is key to plant longevity and overall beauty!
